Can I make money online?
Written by Chewie on December 4, 2008 – 3:10 pmBefore I start this post I want to say that this is for anyone out there that feels unworthy, or feels like they are failing at making money online. There is no technical lesson here only some real life stuff.
I have heard people tell me they weren’t sure about something so they didn’t try it. One of these things is adsense. Do you know how many people I have heard say they are scared to mess up with adsense, so they have shied away till they learn more to be comfortable with it? How can you make money online with adsense if you don’t try it out enough?
We are all full of failures. When you hear about how well guys like Vic, Grizz, and Court do, do you really think they nail every niche they work? You can’t win on every site. Let me give you an example. I have worked 2 niches in the last couple weeks now, that according to the Google keyword tool as well as other search traffic tools should bring in over 90,000 searches a month. They have turned out to be duds! After ranking well for the keywords the traffic was not there. I was able to nail top 3 posts on both of these niches. So what happened? Those 2 niches were failures.
I think its important for those of you who are only making a dollar a day or even 10 dollars a day to remember something. Failing is a part of succeeding. What is a failure? A failure is an expectation of what you think a site should be making and it is not. It causes you to question whether you can make money online or not. Have I ever had my share of these feelings in the past? Heck yes! Sometimes I felt like I was spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere. What changed? Well I just told you those last 2 niches I wored recently were failures right? Wrong!! They really weren’t. I say this because they are still good sites. they still have content, and they still have links. If I ever work something related or similar I now have a place to link from.
Here is what I want you to remember if this post was talking to you.
- Its only a failure when you have given up.
- More growth, more websites, and a bigger network only makes you more powerful.
- Don’t compare with what others are doing. Focus on your own growth.
- Even the Pros have failures.
- Don’t give up!!

Thanks, I know I need to hear that from time to time. A lot of my worries stem from the fact that a part of my brain needs me to prove this to myself before I invest more money.
Example, I didn’t go w/ reseller account and buy lots of prenowned domains because it costs more and I saw what happened to everyone who got the 100 .info sites.
I wound up just buying one new .com and put BANS on it. Then I set up 3 blogger blogs. My brain tells me just to work those sites until I see the rankings and the money (plus it takes me a really long time to get links anyway).
My brain wants me to reinvent the business model you guys use with many different sites. I keep wanting just a few sites that make me $50/day because it seems like less of a hassle than spreading around, even if it isn’t as safe and diverse. I see Grizz’s site making over $100/day, so I say to myself, why not just work a couple/few like that?
Now my BANS is deindexed so instead of moving on like you all teach, I’m clinging to it because of all the work I put into it. I asked for reinclusion and I’m building more links to it and now I’m testing Adwords on it w/ really low search bids. It’s sick how you guys teach us properly but even then I’m stubborn. It might be a holdover from all the A-lister stuff, I don’t know. I think it’s also a trust issue b/c I’ve been burned so many times and I’m tired of spending money instead of making it. Sorry if none of this makes sense. I keep telling myself to just man up and take the plunge, but that’s burned me b/f too.
I’ve got issues lol. But ultimately I feel like as long as I don’t quit, I’ll get there, even if it takes me longer.

OMG that’s long. See why it takes me so long to build links? Maybe I do need help, I just gave my whole life story to a Wookie lol (j/k)

Joe, its good to not only accept the fats but do something. I hope that you can get back on your feet and let go of whats done. Grizz has gone through lots of sites before he had a consistent $100 a day earner. Now imagine how many small sites he may have that earn him $5-20 a day that you don’t know about. Those right there probably add up to be hundreds of dollars a day.
I know I have a bunch of little earners besides my small handful of major big earners. But when I know its time to let a site be I let it be and move on to another.
It takes money to make money. If a person is cheap in this business the process is really slow. If yo are willing to put forth the money that you need for a few tools and buying preowned domains then you are already ahead of the game by 50%.
I really hope that you can find it in yourself to see beyond whats in front of you Joe. Let me know if there is anyway I can be of assistance.

Thanks Chewie, this sort of encouragement is what we noobs need when we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. It seems so far from where we are but you telling us we will get there lends us the energy to take one more step, get one more link and write one more post. Thanks buddy.

Hey Chewie,
Nice post. I was was just going over this kind of thing with someone else.
couple of ?’s question I wanted to ask you was how do you know when it it time to move on? Are you building new sites daily?
Also-with reagard to smart pricing. If your site is relevant, and you get relevant ads, but the ad pricing sucks just because you picke a poorly paying niche, do you leave adsense on it even though the clicks are low? If I understand correctly, as long as your traffic is targeted to the ad shown, you won’t get priced.
Lastly- Vic has mentioned that you had been sort of struggling a bit and based on the few things he worked with you, you were able to really take off.
Can you elaborate on what that was?
Matt

So true.

I only hope Mother get impregnanted more often and bear me many child.
LOL.
Great post.

MelB – I hope so buddy!
Matt – A couple of things to start. Its time to move on when you realize that there are not many more traffic directions you can take a site. Making money online is all about traffic and targeted ads. If you have the 2 you will make money. If either one of those is missing its time to move on. I will do a post on this for you buddy and go into more detail.
As for smart pricing, you eliminate the posts that are not triggering decent ads. If all you posts are not triggering any decent ads, then you take it off. If your clicks are low but the CTR is decent, you just leave it there and move on to a new site.
As for struggling early on when Vic was teaching me, it had to do with me having few sites and little patience. Also not being able to foresee and understand what a site is doing, and when to act and when not to act.
Fuerza – I am happy that was motivating. I think it is important to have these kinds of posts once a week. Maybe I should make that a habit!
Costa – That last line has me cracking up hard! Thanks!

You guys have been teaching me so patiently. I’ll hang in there, and yes, I think soon I will go reseller and start expanding.
“Let me know if there is anyway I can be of assistance.” Thanks so much, but I’ve been on the take too long from you guys, It’s time I figure this stuff out and start paying it forward.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Chewie, could you please elaborate on what Vic told you regarding your patience and how to understand site behavior? I would be glad if you could tell more about this thing.

Chewie,
I was thinking…and based on what I am starting to understand, and what your brother blogging Zombie wrote about…
Is this the key to making money with adsense….
Writing posts targeting the low competition long tails in the title tag that you can rank for with a BMD run, then improving the keyword density on the page to trigger the high paying ads.
Am I getting it now?

Thanks for that Ja, er, Chewie. I’ve recently discovered you guys (V,G,CT) holy information overload Batman. Saw you in the Honest Way forum too and that place is mind boggling as well. I have to stop reading and start building stuff but I can’t stop reading. This one was a pretty good kick in the pants though so thank you!

Norm welcome to the real people of MMO. I am happy you found us. The whole cast is great. As long as you take something away from Vic, Grizz, Court, and this blog you definitely will succeed. These guys are great and will truly keep it real so to speak.
Let me know if you need anything, and feel free to shoot me an email. I will do my best to get back with you as soon as possible.

I have a quick question. I have a blogspot blog and I am going to make indvidual posts to target long tail key terms. In google adwords under “Approx avg search volume” what do you recommend targeting? Is it worth targeting key terms that only get 10-50 searches a month? I’m thinking more about volume, making a lot of posts. However I’m not sure if I should bother or not if the search amount is that low.
December 10th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Mike I definitely say yes. The key is really to pick a niche and target tons of keywords. Start with the easy ones, even if they only get 50 searches a month.
December 10th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Ok thanks for the advice. Blogspot allows you to date individual posts as being months old even though they are brand new. So that allows me to not piss off my regular blog readers. The keyword targeted posts are way back in my archives and my readers will never see them unless they really go digging. I can just use article marketing to get the posts quickly indexed too.
