How to build PR with Wordpress – Part 1

Written by Chewie on November 13, 2008 – 9:49 am

First off I want to say this post has been changed. The first post I made related to using tags in wordpress.com to get link juice flowing. Those tags have since been changed to nofollow which I didn’t realize as it was brought to my attention. It was a method that worked for me last time I built them but has since changed as they have added the nofollow to all of them.

One of the best ways to bring in juice to your site from an external means is using free wordpress.com sites. Part of the problem with getting links that people have at times is doing link exchange with other sites in their niche. Maybe they are hard to find, or its just an obscure subject. In that case you will have to work a little smarter to make sites that have some strong PR. I like to use wordpress.com blogs.

One of the easiest types of link exchanges is wordpress.com blogs. The reason for this is simple, most people have no worries about losing juice since wordpress.com is a non monetized platform. The other reason is that its free to them, so they are also not investing money in their sites.

So how would you begin this process? The first thing you would do is, build a wordpress blog around a subject that a lot of people write about. You might try philosophy, art, photography, poetry, or any of that. After about 4 or 5 posts, you will use the wordpress tags to find other blogs that have high PR in similar categories as you. Once you find them, go ahead and actually take a few minutes to read some of their posts or information about them. Then either use their email if they provide one, or leave a meassage on their about me page even. Let them know you enjoy their blog, and that you have added them to your blogroll. Let them know you would be honored if they added you to theirs as well, and to keep up the great work in writing about what they write about.

Once they come to your blog and see their site on your blogroll, they will more than be likely to add you to theirs. Now I can tell you not everyone is going to add you to their blogroll folks, so just be sure to keep at it. My success rate at a link trade is about 1 in 7. But think about this for a second. If you get at least 2 people to give you a link back from a PR4 or PR5 blog most likely next update you should have at the very least a PR3. Sometimes a PR4.

Then once you have the juice, start conforming your blog to the niche that you are working so that you will relevantly link out to your money site. I can tell you from experience this is an easy way to get a PR4 wordpress.com blog if you spend the little time to exchange the links.

If you find my tips to be helpful feel free to add me to your blogroll or link back to this page. Wookies love links you know!

    Hi Justin,
Are you saying you can/should use tags which are unrelated to your niche, just to get high pr links?
    thanks

    Hi Justin,

Great stuff going on here. Never crossed my mind to get this kind of “indirect” links. Think I’ll just go and start a few of these blogs. LOL.

I see you have “Make Money Online Free” at your footer. Will add that to my blogroll.

BTW.I have been “Akismeted” and I dunno if I’m out yet. :-)

I love the idea and in theory it’s solid gold but wordpress puts a nofollow on the links! :-(

  4. Frank C Says:

Interesting concept but aren’t those WordPress.comtag links nofollow, meaning zero juice?

  5. Mike Says:

Good information. Thanks. I was just wondering, though, why in keyword elite do all the links from wordpress.com blogs appear as nofollow? Is that just a glitch?

  6. Chewie Says:

I am sorry guys, the fun could only last so long. I looked and sure enough they are nofollow. Oh well, I hope you can try this method that I just revised the post to.

Hey even Wookies make mistakes. :(

  7. Don Says:

Yes it did work very well while it lasted, however , the worpress community loves exchanging links usually without reagrd to comaparing PR. I still use them and will continue, free juice is good juice

I’m still not sure if you get any link juice from wordpress.com blogs. In keyword elite any link that my blog has gotten from a wordpress blog shows up as nofollow. Even if I got a blog roll link or a link within a post from them. It doesn’t matter the type of link, they all show up as nofollow. Wordpress.com may have put nofollow on any link coming from a wordpress.com blog. Possibly to prevent link farms? Or is keyword elite wrong and showing nofollow when it shouldn’t be?

  9. Chewie Says:

Mike, keyword elite is off on that.

On wordpress.com can you only have one blog per account?

Also is it ok to add links within the posts after you have PR?

I am not real familiar with wordpress.com. Is there a good source to find out how to use it correctly so you don’t get banned?

    Hey Chewie,

Nice post, but I have a question. I am planning on employing the technique and started searching, but so far, the sites I come across with the high pr seem to be very legit with serious info- like medical journals, etc, or a person with a huge well established identity.

When going for these kinds of links, and you create your network, do you do it where you are very opinionated, or do you do more articles.

And in your experience, do you find that you need to let our posts age? Seems like a blogger would think things are suspicious if you have 10 posts all on the same day, and then are out looking for blog roll links?

    Thanks

    Matt

    does this really work?

i am using wordpress on self-hosted account because I would love to have 100% freedom and a lot of incoming and outgoing link connected to my site.

thanks for sharing, it’s a great read..

  13. Wastedboy Says:

I have the same case with Linn. I have three blog sites, make that four including the domain itself. I hosted my own blogs though, I’m running Wordpress for these blogs. So, will the technique still work?
