Make Money From Home

Written by Chewie on April 19, 2009 – 9:31 am

Since everyone wants to work at home and make easy money on the internet, I thought I might share with you the results that working from home online can have on a person.

If you are tired of your job and want to change things up a bit, then you probably think that working from your desk at the house is the way to go. Don’t be so fast! Let me tell you over the last 2 years how making money online has been a positive thing and a negative thing for me.

The simple concept of building sites and getting links is just that, simple. Why so many people don’t get it I really don’t know. One thing I do know is that it takes a determination and fire to get up every day and work for weeks and sometimes months without seeing any real results. I should know, I have done this for over 2 years now. Now its a lot easier, but the motivation has really died out. What happened?

the first drive you get from building websites and either monetizing them with adsense or with affiliate products is crazy. I would work for almost 15 hours a day and feel like a hamster running in a wheel. It seemed like the harder I tried the less I got anywhere. Then finally it all started coming together. I was making extra money from home and still working at a full time job, but now I actually had some cash to show for all that hard work. it wasn’t a lot of cash, but it was something. That drove me to just get more excited about making money from home and quitting my day job. Especially when i was having some health issues and missing a lot of work

I finally made that plunge and quit my day job to make money from home. The money was not great so we had to struggle a little with my wife still working hard at her job. It took time, and with her support I finally made it. Things Kept growing and growing, but I was still working so many hours and it seemed so unnecessary.

Working from home was taking its toll on me, and not only was I burned out, but my social life was also suffering. I spent so much time in the digital world that i never spent time speaking with people face to face. I literally had become a recluse, and now I was getting sick more often. One of my hands was having serious problems from working around the clock typing.

Making money online has taken its toll, both physically and emotionally. It still takes its toll everyday in one way or another, and has become a miserable and dreaded job even though its still a passion.

I think I have told people doing what I do to work as hard as you can, and to get as much done as you can. However I failed to mention rest. If you do not rest from this internet money making job you will hurt yourself more than you know.

If I could go back and do it all over again, I would have made a schedule for this stuff. No working for 15 hours straight looking at a screen. No working all night long and well into the next day until my eyes are burning red.

While I have not worked online like this for a long time now, I can truly say that if you want to make a legitimate income from home, you need to think about your family and your health before making money. If you don’t you will be miserable. i just thought it was important to outline the miserable effects from spending 95% of your life in your home without seeing sunlight for 2 years.

You can still make a living from working at home and be happy, just make a schedule, and get plenty of exercise. Go to the gym, and go walking to clear your head or you can drive yourself mad, believe me, I know. :)

It is so very true, in order to make legitimate income from home you have to bust it. The first 10 mos. I worked from home was the same exact thing. Wake work on the computer until it was time to go to bed. Getting it to a place where you can generate some good income takes time and without a mentor can take forever. Glad I found Grizz and Vic early on in my endeavors.

Josh, I sure hope you get rest and take time out, if you don’t it can really affect you for a long time.

Justin, I was wondering what happened to you. Thanks for talking about the downside of working online. Although I have experienced some of this first hand. Working online is time consuming and you do always feel like a hamster on a wheel because usually the goals we set take longer then we thought and then we feel behind and get stressed. At least that’s what I go through. So thanks for talking about this, and don’t be a stranger.

I’ve been suffering from the same thing. My internet activities have taken over my whole life to the point I’ve been neglecting everything else. Just this weekend I’ve decided enough was enough and that I was going to go to the gym again, like I used to before, even if that means it’ll postpone my success for a few months. In the grand scheme of things, your health and loved ones are the most important things.

This is for sure one the most important posts that could be written.

Fitness really needs to be integrated into the regime. It’s so easy to become a doughball (ask me how I know ~ LOL!).

Identifying one’s priorities and then spending time according to those priorities is the key.

    Thanks for sharing!

I so know where you come from. Even though my husband has just lost his job and we need money more now than ever, I also know he needs me to be with him and support what he is going through.

We both know that it is unlikely that he will ever be employed again even though he is an engineer. We live in Michigan and he is close to 60 years old.

I have spent the past 3 years being a slave to trying to make money online and since I have stepped back from my endeavors and focused towards the people in my life it seems that working online has become more enjoyable and I am able to function more efficiently.

I was getting all stressed and obsessive about what I wasn’t doing online and now it just seems to flow so much better.

I wanted to work online to have freedom of choice not to become a slave in a cage once again.

Now I know I am going to be OK and that I will be able to make as much money as I need to survive and some.

Thanks for posting this topic. This seems to be a very common issue when working online.

I’ve had 20/20 vision my entire life. I have to wear glasses now. The monitor itself is not dangerous however several years of 12 hr. days starring into a light source that’s only 1 to 2 feet away can be.

A true statement and it is a fact that working out will actually increase your level of energy instead of reducing it.

One of disadvantages that I see in working the “niche model” is that you’ll be doing “conveyor belt” work for months and years. Personally I know that I have a hard time doing that for too long.

Luckily you’re able to outsource most of it (that is what I do) but you would naturally need the money to pay for the outsourcing coming from somewhere… :)

Great honest post – its definitly an issue. I luckily we often go away for weekends – every 6 weeks or so – and now I don’t take the laptop – I need to be disconnected! I am actually thinking about starting an SEO consultancy business on the side just so I can go out and meet people face-2-face every now and then! Lissie

Nice post. I also have a good experience of making more money in quick time. The place is ^%%$$#.com They provide us the full of support. And the payment method is more reliable.

  11. Blogging Gems Says:

Just blogging is the definite way to self-exploitation. You work work and gain little. And the reason for this is simple. If You really know something, few others know then You can write about with a few words and everyone would be crazy to read that. If You just know as much as everyone, then You have to have a lot of text to get a few readers through the search engines. It’s not about the amount of words, it’s about what is the message.

Apart from that, seriously think about outsourcing those no-brainers like marketing and backlinking.

Blogging Gems – I do things quite a bit different than 2 years ago, and yes I have other people doing things for me. What I am trying to say is that when you first start out the long period of overworking yourself can really hurt you in the long run. Even if you did change things later, you can still just be generally burned out. That,s kind of why I didn’t do any work for about 2 months. I just was burned out from the whole bit. Blogging is just one part of my business though. There are other things that I do which contribute to the feeling of being burned out as well. But thanks anyways for your suggestions.

In a genre full of hype and self promotion this article stands out like a giant beacon of reality!

What you say is so true. I was working myself into the ground too. I started being sensible a few months ago. I cut back on hours, went to the gym and I am sure I now get MORE done with less hours.

The point of making money online from home is, of course to have a better life. So what is the point in ruining your life in the process? There is of course NO POINT!

Good article! Can you share with us(me) any of your current or past projects that we could look at?

    Good luck Chewie!

    John
