Allyn - You will only see the twitter results within search when a topic is hot or important at the moment for Google to put it there. Sometimes the twitter results are at the top of the page too! :)

When I go to Google and search, I have to click on "show options" tab in order to see Tweets or blog updates.
IOW-- I don't necessarily think the average internet user is going to go that deep.
I still think most folks just "search" and click the top listing. But as time goes on, more and more people may start to use these more specific options.
in that case, it may be worthwhile to build links to actual tweets or twitter accounts and see if that makes them show up higher.
Currently, if I search Twitter thru Google (you search 'updates') for "chicago news" it gives me the string based on most recent tweet, not anything to do with authority.
So to exploit "chicago news" I would want some sort of auto-tweet feature that constantly throws out that term or maybe even hash tag.
If too many people start doing that, Twitter will go in the crapper fast.
